Lathrop, treasurer for the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad, the city was once known as the “Mule Capital of the World.” In the early 1900s, the Guyton and Harrington firm in Lathrop supplied over 350,000 horses and mules to the British Army during World War I, with facilities capable of supporting 17,000 mules at a time .
