Kansas City Weekend Happenings May 26 – 29, 2017

It’s Memorial Day weekend which signifies the start of summer – don’t worry if you don’t have plans to head out of town, there are plenty of events happening in Kansas City this long weekend!

Once again this weekend there are plenty of live music events happening in Kansas City.

For those that enjoy some “mighty fine pickin’ and a singin'” (bonus points if you can name the movie that I just quoted), you would love to go the Westport Roots Festival, obviously taking place in Westport. This three-day music festival takes place Friday through Sunday and focuses entirely on traditional and neo-traditional American music stylings – so bring on the fiddles, banjos, guitars, and maybe even a wash board. Follow the link above to see all of the bands and artists that will be playing and when they play. Tickets are only $40 and will get you access to all 3 days of the festival.

The other 3-day music festival happening in KC this weekend is the KC Jazz & Heritage Festival at the 18th & Vine Jazz District. The festival features numerous jazz & soul musicians across 4 stages Friday through Sunday. There are various ticket options depending on how many days you’d like to attend and whether you want to see all the stages or just the main stage. There will also be a Free KC Showcase stage featuring some of Kansas City’s most talented jazz musicians.

And for the country music fans out there, KC country radio station Q104 will be hosting Yallapalooza 2017 at Providence Amphitheater this Friday evening. This year the concert will feature Cole Swindell, Kip Moore, Michael Ray, Drew Baldridge, and more.

The third music festival this weekend is the Kearney Blues Festival at the Kearney Amphitheater. The festival will be Saturday night from 5-10pm. Entertainment will be provided by The Electric Rev – Jimmie Bratcher, The Old No. 5’s, Knock Kneed Sally, and Dan Bliss. Tickets are $5 when purchased in advance here or $15 at the gate.

Grab your blankets, lawn chairs, and snacks for Popcorn in the Park: Rogue One at Liberty’s Stocksdale Park this Friday evening. Come watch Rogue One: A Star Wars Story under the stars in the park with the whole family starting at 8:30pm. Liberty Parks & Rec will be providing free popcorn & water but feel free to pack some Milk Duds and soda, just no alcohol.

A Memorial Day Weekend tradition takes place this Sunday night – the Kansas City Symphony’s Celebration at the Station 2017. This is a free event where the whole city is invited to enjoy the symphony on the lawn in front of Union Station. The concert starts at 8pm and is finished with fireworks at 9:45pm.

One way to kick off summer this weekend is at the 6th Annual Westport Block Party at Kelly’s Westpost Inn and other Westport establishments. This party will have a full outdoor bar and live music by Lost Wax. Tickets to this event are $10 and include a beer and an event koozie.

Another sure sign of summer approaching is the area water parks opening. Oceans of Fun and Schlitterbahn will be opening this weekend and thanking our men and women of service with free admission to the parks. One of Worlds of Fun Military Days will be Monday and men & women who are currently serving and veterans will receive complimentary admission to the park, along with discounted admission for up to 6 of their immediate family members. Schlitterbahn will also be thanking the men and women of service with free admission, but will be including more service fields – including military, police, firefighters, and EMTs, and for an entire week, Monday, May 29th – Sunday, June 4th, dubbed American Heroes Week.
