Kansas City Weekend Happenings June 2 – 4, 2017

Wow, there is a TON of events happening in Kansas City this weekend! There’s something for everyone so get out there and enjoy your weekend!

Old Shawnee Days this Weekend

First up, starting on Thursday and happening through Sunday is Old Shawnee Days at Shawnee Town. This annual free festival will have live music, a carnival, a parade, vendors, other entertainment, and even a baking competition. Thursday night from 6-10pm is the special carnival wristband night – get all access to the carnival rides for $25 or $15 for kid 6 & under, there will also be live music and limited concessions. The festival will be open Friday 6-10pm, Saturday 11am-10pm (with the parade at 10am), and Sunday 11:30am-6pm. Another festival happening this weekend will be Festa Italiana at Zona Rosa Friday through Sunday. This ethnic festival is a Northland favorite celebrating Italian traditions and Italian-American culture. Enjoy a tasty assortment of Italian food favorites, a beer garden, an Italian Car Show, food eating contests, live performances, and more. The festival’s hours are Friday 5-11pm, Saturday 11am-11pm, and Sunday 11am-6pm.


This weekend also holds the Kansas City PrideFest 2017 at Berkley Riverfront Park Friday through Sunday. This festival is packed with all sorts of things to do and see – there will be a wide variety of live entertainment, food, a Ferris wheel, a kids zone, vendors, volleyball, and much more! Admission is $10 a day, children 12 & under are free, and tickets can be purchased online or at the gate (still $10 at the gate).


Friday and Saturday evening you can enjoy some great blues music at the annual Gladstone Summertime Bluesfest at Oak Grove Park. Gates open at 5pm with music starting at 6pm on Friday night with featured artists Amanda Fish, Nick Schnebelen Band, Albert Castiglia. Saturday evening the gates will open at 3pm and music will start at 4pm, provided by Brody Buster, Andy T Band with Alabama Mike, Fiona Boyes, and Zac Harmon. There will be food and beverages available for purchase at the event. Parking will cost $5 and a suggested $5 donation will be collected at the gate.


The Kansas City Zoo’s largest fundraiser is this Friday night – Jazzoo! 2017. Jazzoo helps raise funds that pay for food for more than 1,700 animals that reside at the zoo in addition to supporting the numerous education programs provided by the zoo and operational costs. This is one of the top rated charity events in Kansas City (officially rated by Ingram’s magazine) for a reason – it features live music stages placed throughout the zoo, delectable bites from over 70 of Kansas City’s top restaurants, and a wide variety of libations to wet your whistle. The night kicks off at 7:30pm and wraps up at 11:30pm, tickets are $175 and can be purchased here. (This is a 21+ event)


This Friday is First Friday at the Crossroads Arts District. In addition to the usual First Friday happenings, there will be the Crossroads Flock Party 2017. This free block party will be at W 19th and Wyandotte in the Crossroads. There will be live music from regionally local bands, food & drinks, local makers, and more. Head down between 5-11pm to enjoy the party.


One of KC’s largest concerts is this weekend – Rockfest. Saturday, 98.9 The Rock’s Rockfest will be celebrating it’s 25th birthday at the Kansas Speedway. Gates open at 11am. Follow the link above to find the lineup, set times and ticket options.


A fun, family-friendly event happening this weekend is Martha’s Great Outdoor Challenge at Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary in Liberty. Assemble a team of 2-5 of your favorite people to participate in this event Saturday morning that consists of mental, physical, and just-for-fun challenges placed throughout the sanctuary. You earn coins for completing each task, teams collecting the most coins within the 2-hour event will be awarded prizes. You do need to register your team prior to the event – the event will start at 9:30am with packet pick-up from 8:30-9:15am. Registration price varies between $40-$45 when payed in advance or $50-$75 when payed at the event based on your team type (family, kids w/ chaperone, seniors, or adults). If your little ones love PAW Patrol then they are sure to enjoy PAW Patrol LIVE!: Race to the Rescue this Saturday at Music Hall Kansas City. The show will be at 2pm and will feature all your child’s favorite PAW Patrol characters. There is also a VIP (Very Important Pup) ticket option that gets you a premium seat, special gift and exclusive access to a Meet & Greet with Chase, Ryder and Skye after the show. Tickets start at $32.


Another family-friendly event this Saturday is the Movie Night Kickoff at the lake at The Village at Briarcliff. Grab your lawn chairs, blankets, and snacks to watch the hit Disney movie Moana at dusk (8:45-9pm). Also, enjoy food trucks, inflatables, face painting and more the hour prior to showtime. Bonus: it’s a free event!


Calling all dog lovers! You and your furry friend will love the BarkHappy KC Pup Crawl & Costume Parade happening in North Kansas City. This pup friendly bar crawl will be Saturday from 1-4pm and will benefit the KC Pet Project. There will be four dog-friendly stops (Calibration, Cinder Block, Restless Spirits, and Colony Espresso and Le Monde Bakery) with exclusive specials, on site vendors, games and giveaways! Dress your dog in a silly, fun, or simple dog costume to show off as we parade through the stops, with a group photo at the third stop at Restless Spirits (2:45pm). Tickets are $15 come with free goodies and gifts worth over $50!
