Kansas City Weekend Happenings August 11 – 13, 2017

Summer is wrapping up and the kids are heading back to school next week – so make the most of this weekend! Here are some of the top events happening in Kansas City this weekend.

The Missouri State Fair Starts this Weekend

If you’re not opposed to the almost 2 hour drive to Sedalia, the Missouri State Fair has begun and will be open until August 20th. The state fair offers all sorts of entertainment, too much to write all about.  So follow the link above and explore the website to see all that the fair has to offer!

We are almost a week away from the event of the summer – the total solar eclipse! And Kansas City is lucky enough to be along the path of totality! In efforts to educate and excite viewers for this upcoming astrological event, the Kansas City Museum will be hosting  Prelude to the Solar Eclipse this Friday evening. Joseph Wright, Operations Manager of the Warkoczewski Observatory at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and other members of the Astronomical Society of Kansas City (ASKC) will be leading an evening of sky tours and discussion of the upcoming 2017 Great American Total Solar Eclipse. The astronomers will be on hand to answer questions, share views of the sky, and have meteorites on hand for your examination as well as information to help you be prepared for this summer’s spectacular sky show. This free event will take place outside at the Museum and will start at 6:30pm and wrap up at 9pm. Feel free to bring lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic. There will also be a free concert by The Phantastics from 7-9pm at the Museum. Also, following this event, additional observing can be done at Warkoczewski Observatory at UMKC until 11:00pm.

Also on Friday night is the first Chiefs Preseason Game vs. San Fransisco 49ers. The game starts at 8pm and will be held at Arrowhead Stadium. If you’re not going to the stadium but still want to watch, it will be broadcasted on the NFL Network channel.

A great event this weekend to take the kids to is the Sprint Family Fun Days: Summer Splash at Kansas City Power & Light District. Saturday, from 11am-3pm, the kiddos can dance along with Mr. Stinky Feet, play on obstacle courses, create arts & crafts, play games, watch a StoneLion Puppet Theatre show, learn about Wacky Waves from Mad Science, and so much more! Admission is free but there will be additional premium activities that require a $5 all-access wristband to enjoy (follow the link above to find what activities will be available for free and what activities require the wristband). You can also purchase in advance a Kids Package that includes a balanced lunch & the wristband for $10 here.

And for those who love dogs and shopping, there’s an event Saturday that you’ll love! Dog Days of Shopping at The Village at Briarcliff will be happening from 12-3pm. Bring your pooch to shop and raise money and awareness for NAWS – Northland Animal Welfare Society. 10% of sales from select stores will go directly to this wonderful Northland organization whose sole mission is to reduce the number of unwanted and discarded animals in the community. There will also be $25 microchipping, a caricaturist to draw your pooch, and fun vendors! Bar K Dog Bar will be there passing out complimentary libations while you and your furry best friend shop! All sizes and breeds of dogs are welcome in the stores, so long as they’re well behaved and friendly.

Who doesn’t love a good block party? This Saturday will be the Parkville Commons Block Party & Music Festival. Support local Parkville Commons businesses and our community non-profit beneficiaries, Synergy Services & Parkville Shop With A Cop. There will be live bands, fun activities for kids, amazing food & drinks and more! Parkville Commons is located at 6325 Lewis Dr, which is the center where Nick & Jake’s is located.

Another event Saturday that sounds like a blast and a half is Fat Tire Presents Tour de Fat at CrossroadsKC at Grinder’s. The event’s website warns to “expect to experience the unexpected” at this festival. Entertainment will be headlined by Atlas Genius with local band favorite JAENKI, along with the Tour de Fat ensemble cast of performers. Ready your eyes and ears for a mix of musicians, circus performers, vaudeville acts, magicians, comedians, and mind-blowing provocateurs. Costumes are highly encouraged (and a mindset to party is mandatory). Tickets are only $15 too! Tour de Fat Kansas City benefits Bike Walk KC, so party on for a good cause!

Baseball and the hot dog have had a long love affair, this relationship will be celebrated at the Heart of America Hot Dog Festival at Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. This event features live entertainment, food, and more. The festival will include headline concert performances by legendary funk band ZAPP along with R&B legends AFTER 7 and BLOODSTONE. The festival starts at 3pm (gates open at 2pm) and will wrap up by 11pm. Tickets start at $20 for adults and $10 for children, there are also 2 VIP ticket options. Make sure to bring your blankets and/or lawn chairs if you purchase GA tickets. Proceeds from this event benefit the museum.
